Last week was one of the busiest I’ve had in a while, including 60 hours of work in a five day period (that included a 14 hour marathon writing session). On top of that the headlines of the past week have been full of doom and gloom that is almost enough to drive a perpetual optimist such as myself to drink (almost;)

This weekend also happened to be my 31st birthday, so naturally this came with a lot of self reflection and soul searching, specifically about what I have accomplised in the past year, what my life plans are going forward, and how that can translate into helping others live better, and fuller (and yes, financiall richer) lives.

That’s why I’m not starting on a three part series about what I believe to be the three most important keys to becoming not just truly financially independent, but also maximizing your overall happiness.

So let’s take a look at the first step to financial freedom, which although challenging, is one of the greatest things you can ever hope to accomplish.

I’m an Army veteran and former energy dividend writer for The Motley Fool. I currently write for both Seeking Alpha, Simply Safe Dividends, Investorplace.com, and TheStreet.com.

My goal is to help all people learn how to harness the awesome power of dividend growth investing to achieve their financial dreams, and enrich their lives. With 20 years of investing experience, I’ve learned what works and more importantly, what doesn’t, when it comes to building long-term wealth and income streams. I’m currently on an epic quest to build a broadly diversified, high-quality, high-yield dividend growth portfolio that:

1. Pays a 4% to 5% yield
2. Offers 9% to 10% annual dividend growth
3. Pays dividends AT LEAST on a weekly, but preferably, daily basis
